Important Facts
Westmoreland

Blessed with the rich, verdant beauty of deep, rural Jamaica; Westmoreland is also noted for its beautiful coastline. Here, persons can find other scenic beaches that are ‘off the beaten track’ including the popular Bluefields Beach. This parish, once home to the Tainos and Spanish settlers, also boasted two haciendas belonging to the King of Spain and was where piracy ended with the capture of infamous pirate, Calico Jack, and his two pregnant female deputies at Bloody Bay in 1720. English colonists from Suriname settled in the area now called Suriname Quarters. After Emancipation, Indian and African indentured workers came to work in sugar and still maintain much of their culture. The African Anagos called their settlement Abeokuta after their native city in West Africa, while Germans also came as indentured servants and established Seaford Town.
