St. Mary
Lying on the north-eastern side of the island, St. Mary is a lush, green parish with imposing mountains, winding rivers and a virtually unspoiled coastline. First called ‘Puerta Santa Maria’ or ‘Port Maria’, this area was home to a large population of Tainos. St. Mary became one of the most important plantation regions growing mainly sugarcane and later banana and coconuts. St. Mary also saw the infamous 1760 revolt, which was led by an enslaved African called Tacky from the Frontier Estate. It was quelled by the militia and regular troops aided by the Scott’s Hall Maroons. Tacky’s Memorial now stands in the Claude Stuart Park at Port Maria.
