  • Important Facts
    St. James

Rich in history and beauty, St. James is bound to the north by picture-perfect sandy-white beaches and aqua waters. Cool, green mountains to the south feature charming towns, villages and old estates.

Spanish colonists boiled lard from wild hogs in the area earning the place name Bahia de Manteca (Bay of Lard) eventually called Montego Bay.

The British expanded sugarcane cultivation and slave labour. The enslaved grew restive and participated in a massive rebellion in 1831, organized throughout St. James by Baptist deacon Sam ‘Daddy’ Sharpe. This, and other revolts and rebellions, effectively forced the passage of Emancipation legislation in 1834 and earned for Sam Sharpe a National Hero status. By the late 1800s, through the industry of peasant farmers, banana became the main crop and banana boats returned with visitors who flocked Montego Bay’s beaches, especially Doctor’s Cave.  Montego Bay now Jamaica’s tourism capital and home to the island’s second international airport.
